I am just wondering because Miami Marlins of MLB is building a new stadium with retractable roof that will be finished by 2012. I don’t think it is proper to do that, but it is possible. Will it be profitable to host a winter classic in the South if there were right kinds of stadiums?

BQ: Do you think we should have an American and Canadian Winter classic? why?
BQ2: Who should host the 2013 Winter classic or classics’ if Canadians join in? What teams should play? why?

the only time we’ll see a Winter Classic in Florida is in the next ice age

BQ: no. alot more American teams than Canadian teams

BQ2: Toronto vs. Winnipeg in Toronto at the Rogers Centre

it depends, you never know where the nhl will host the winter classic.

bq, no because the canadian one will get super boring since theres only a couple teams. so only so much match ups you can do.

The Winter Classic is supposed to be played outside. That’s the whole point of it, hockey started outside. If Florida can keep the frigid cold temperatures needed while keeping the game outdoors, then maybe. Also add snow, we get a lot more up north. I want real snow during winter classics or colder temperatures like the game was meant to be played…up North.

BQ: I want a Winter Classic that somehow tests the Original Six teams, an Original Six tournament would own.
BQ2: Montreal, Toronto..Most passion?

Its quite possible. They have the technology and could build an arena outside that stays frozen in Florida. Anyone that has been to florida in the winter knows it gets cold at night, so it would be a night game.

BQ One winter classic a year is enough.
BQ2 Not all Canadian city’s have the proper stadiums to hold a winter classic. Keep in mind that they are usually played on football fields, a CFL field is much wider than an NFL field so the fans in Canada are far from the arena.

No. Weather notwithstanding, playing a “Winter Classic” with an average January high temp of 21C makes no sense. Not to mention it would be competing for attention with the Orange Bowl college football game.

BQ: The league already does- our version is called the Heritage Classic. The Winter Classic is a trademark owned by NBC.
BQ2: Detroit makes the most sense. Weather shouldn’t be an issue; they could host it at Comerica Park and get a ton of use out of the ice (with college and OHL games), and NBC would have no drama having a game in Detroit.

Winter Classics are played outside… However, it does get pretty cold in FL (not northern cold obviously, but still in low 30′s and sometimes high 20′s), so it could be possible

BQ: Yes. All the Canadian teams suck…(except Toronto) and usually the WC is played with cup contenders.

BQ2:
Buffalo Sabres @ New York Rangers (New Meadowlands)
Edmonton Oilers @ Toronto Maple Leafs (open Rogers Centre)

or

Los Angeles Kings @ Minnesota Wild (Target Field)
Vancouver Canucks @ Ottawa Senators (Frank Clair Stadium)

The whole idea behind the Winter Classic is that it’s an OUTDOOR game. Even if they put the roof in place and kept the stadium cold until the game, I can’t see it working. It just doesn’t get cold enough in the Miami area. I grew up in Central Florida and still have family there. It’s not unheard-of to wear SHORTS in December. So, no, a Winter Classic in the south would not work.

BQ: I get that NBC owns the rights to the Winter Classic, but it still would be nice to see just one event.
BQ2: I’d like to see a team that has yet to play in a Winter Classic play. Perhaps the Dallas Stars at Minnesota Wild? I know that Washington will host one in the next year or two, but as to who they’ll play, that’s up in the air. I’d love to see the Tampa Bay Lightning here to spark a little divisional rivalry.

Um have you seen the number of people that go to Florida Marlins/ Florida Panthers games? You can find more people at one of those Vampire movies…I mean, along with what the others said (not trying to steal answers) I honestly don’t think there’s a large enough market where people would go. I mean you can get what center ice tickets at a Florida Panthers game for what $40….Hahaha…You know what $40 will get you at any other hockey Arena?…You’ll get seats at the bar across the street and like 4 drinks…If I ever move to Florida I’m buying season tickets.

I was at the first winter classic in buffalo. If the winter classic is in florida it wouldnt have the WINTER feeling.
Bq: no because canada has their own outside game later in the month
bq2: sabres vs blue jackets at OSU

	Global Warming bud…

The Marlins will attempt to woo C.J. Wilson with a South Florida visit and stadium tour on Monday, writes Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun Sentinel. Rodriguez writes that the Marlins are likely to put a bid in for Wilson considering that pitching is their top priority and the winter meetings are just around the corner.

Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle, and Albert Pujols have already visited Miami and each free agent received an offer from the club. Prince Fielder is about the only high-end free agent that the Marlins haven’t hosted and nothing is scheduled yet, which may or may not speak to their interest level.

Buehrle got to check out the Marlins’ new park well before Wilson, but that doesn’t mean that Buehrle is higher on the club’s board. A source who spoke with a Marlins official in the early stages of the free agency period said he believed Miami preferred Wilson

interesting how their going for all these top agents
i wouldn’t sign any of them more then a year or 2 max

Miami is trying to make huge strides this year with a new owner, new name, and just new everything. I doubt they get Pujols, but they have a good chance of getting Buehrle and maybe even Jose Reyes. C.J. Wilson is an amazing pitcher but I don’t think he will want to go from the A.L. to the N.L. I think he has a better chance in Texas and has better chemistry with the guys in Arlington. But i don’t know, maybe they’ll get him.

It’s very interesting, and signing even two of the four players they had made offers to would be a huge boost in 2012. However, long term it might not be a great idea. In most contracts, player salaries continue to grow. So, even if the team can afford these players now, they might not be able to in 3, 4, or 5 years. Look at 2003: They won the WS but couldn’t resign Pudge Rodriguez and had to trade Derrek Lee and then Miguel Cabrera, and were forced to use underwhelming replacements.

The Marlins will either get Reyes, Burlehe, and Wilson, or just Pujols. Those are my thoughts, and I think the first choice is more acurate. And yes as a Marlins fan I would like Wilson over Burlehe because Wilson is younger (and better).

i’ve been a florida marlin fan for awile now but it seems like not very many people like them. what do you think of the marlins?
yes i know about the florida marlins now becoming the "miami marlins" and moving to little havana but they have no history yet so that would not make much sense to ask the question

The Florida Marlins are now a part of history.

But the Miami Marlins carry on, upholding the proud traditions of the ancestral Florida Marlins!

– WIne and dine top free agents to make a credible showing of trying to sign expensive talent!

– Trading away key players just prior to them reaching free agency* or arbitration, when they start to cost real money!

– Keeping payroll low, among the lowest in the majors, while collecting piles of revenue sharing receipts! (Phase three: profit!)

– While simultaneously claiming that they’re in a small market and need more, more, MORE money!

– Using shady, underhanded, and deceptive (i.e., GAAP — generally accepted accounting practices) accounting methods to spin fans and city councils into forking over tens of millions for a new mallpark!

– Occasionally and by sheer dumb luck putting together a winning team and claiming a championship.**

I honestly have no quibble with the Marlins team, but find their current owner’s consistent behavior to be odious and loathsome, among the very worst in the MLB team owner fraternity, and that takes some doing.

———-
* To be fair, and there’s no reason we should be but there it is, pretty much every team does this.

** Policy and planning for future third such incident is indeterminate, but Marlins fans should hope for the best. Lightning could strike again.

To be honest, I have never liked them, I don’t dilike them as much as the Braves and Yankees, but I just don’t like them.

I have never really liked them.

Their “fans” suck, granted most are either retirees on SSI or just rejects from different states, they don’t attend games. The Marlins had the lowest fan attendance of any team AFTER winning a WS! “Fans” in Miami would rather watch college football, it’s all they’re good at. Occasionally they jump the Miami Heat bandwagon, like they did in 2006 and last season.

I think the “Miami Marlins” will be a massive financial flop, then hopefully relocate to a city that deserves them.

Seems like your not really a fan since there the MIAMI Marlins

There is no team called the “Florida Marlins” so you couldn’t be that big of a fan if you don’t know that.

I think they existed, but don’t exist now.

Its fun to see two guys chasing a ball through the outfield stands cause theres nobody there at the game LOL

When I hear of Florida Marlins, I think of low fan attendance and fish. I also think of them as not the best team but they have some shining moments. Hopefully as Miami Marlins, everything will be revived and they will be more of an MLB team than in recent years.

I think they’re now the “Miami Marlins”

I think it’s a great name change (they don’t represent Florida, they represent Miami) and I ask because the next year after the Angels changed their name (to the Los Angeles Angels which makes zero sense since they have absolutely nothing to do with LA, they’re not even in LA county), they won the World Series.

The Marlins are still putting together their team and it’s looks like they’re heading in a positive direction. How do you think they’ll do in ’12?
Johnny C – read my post again. Please show me anywhere I wrote:

A. there was glamor
B. That I"m a Marlins fan

More proof 95% of the people in here are idiots with major reading comprehension issues. Johnny C is the perfect example.

	World Series

	New Name: Check
New Stadium: Check
Same Garbage Team : Check

Dont let all the glamour fool you. Their best player (Hanley Ramirez) does not care at all. Their best pitcher (Josh Johnson) cant stay healthy. And they will not be able to get a major free agent too come their because of the fan base. And when they do get a free agent, he will be 2nd tier and will totally over pay him. Ex. Jayson Werth with Nationals. Im sorry to say this because you are a Marlins fan but as long as their is a baseball team in florida (Rays & Marlins), their teams wont have the fan base to support a MLB team.

	LOL
Well they extended contract offers of a LOT of money to pujols and reyes.
their season depends almost entirely on those two possible signings, with a +/- of 5 games depending on their mediocre rotation and slightly below-average bullpen.
If rickey nolasco can be even half as good as he was in 08 theyll have a better rotation.
It’ll be fresh and they’ll probably be one of the better teams in the NL at home, but they might tail off down the stretch as Marlins teams have done for the past 8 years .
Stanton needs protection in the batting order, without it, look for him to hit about .250 this year since pitchers will have more experience and video to use against him.

Miami is a seasonal destination, tourists flock there for nightlife every spring break, summer vacation, the occasional holiday.. When it’s not catering to tourism, it’s a hole. The locals only live there because they can afford the undesirable housing on their low wages. You make it sound like Miami is cosmopolitan, HA!

The Marlins don’t suck but they aren’t a better team than Philly or Atlanta, therefore will not be contending for a playoff spot + I’ve yet to see Ricky Nolasco live up to his ST hype.

	you can’t polish a turd…

the Florida Marlins, because they represent Miami, not Florida. However, I’m not too big on the uniform and logo. The M looks like a gay rainbow. Looks like something a 10 year old artist could come up with in 6th grade art class. I’m surprised they went with that one. What do you think?

honestly if the m wasnt rainbow that i would like it more. i think you made perfect sense with the whole representing miami thing. no rainbow, no problem

my first thought when I saw the new Marlins logo was “minor league”

Name change makes sense but the new uniform a logo need to be changed.

As as been mentioned here about 200 times now, yes, the uniforms are awful. They were designed by Loria himself, not a design firm, hence the 6th grade art class look. Just dreadful looking uniforms.

Yeah I don’t like the rainbow…at least they should have stuck with Miami Dolphins’ colors if they wanted to be unique. The font on the front of the unis is not bad, it’s just that big M in Miami doesn’t fit in the rest. Should have used a plain M instead

Yeah as everyone else has said the new uniforms look awful. They do look have the 6th grade art class look I agree. I don’t think calling them the Miami Marlins is going to draw all the new fans that they are hoping it will, but it does make sense to call them the Miami Marlins and not the Florida Marlins to me too.

i like the logo it is awesome florida sounds better than miami marlins

Yes, the Miami Marlins new logo & uniforms are great. I plan on buy a Miami Marlins cap.

The people who made them are on the drug$! The Yank$ are smart guys like me and dont use the roid$! Then they can make good uniforms.
Go Yanks!

Just when I thought I had read it all, I read something new.

It turns out, according to the revealing answers I just read within a question asking whether Pujols has pulled a "LeBron" (pejoratively), that the consensus was he did not. Why? According to the respondents, that is because Pujols left the Cardinals, who were so loyal to him, because of money. Therefore that is more decorous than leaving your team in order to try to be part of a championship squad.

Was it not just a couple of years ago that players were being upbraided or even excoriated for supposedly only taking into consideration money and contracts?

Boy, I’m beginning to believe that many here are: either conflated and have significant difficulties sorting out their own positions within the same theme (so which is it, money or winning?), or they are shifty about their replies in a desultory fashion, perhaps due to the fact they still hold an enervating hatred for anything Miami, which inadvertently suffuses their comments when a topic involving South Florida arises.

I guarantee you had Pujols signed with the Miami Marlins, he too would have been fleered and burned at the stake, just like LeBron was; in many cases by sequacious "fans". Yet since he is going to the Angels, all is well and no surreptitious activity is presumed. At some point, bygones must be bygones and life goes on. The most important thing is to retain some semblance of objectivity…
I have heard no such 275 offer by the Marlins. Source?

Pujols took a discount to sign with them before and they are going to disrespect him by offering a weak contract compare to all the other first basemen in the league. Maybe he did leave because of the money but not so much since the Marlins offer him 275 mil for 10 years and he rejected that. Lets be real now.

Pujols did the same thing lebron did. He just did it for a different reason and didn’t televise his decision. In the end people need to get over it and move on. Lebron isn’t your family member. Stop acting like he betrayed you personally.

Here is the difference – Pujols left for the ridiculous money after winning 2 World Series with the Cardinals. LeBron said he would win a championship for his home town and failed to do so. Albert does not owe the Cardinals anything. LeBron on the other hand left his hometown tittle-less and said he would win 8 rings in Miama. Two totally different situations.

Angels vs Phillies – LAA in 7

Philly is going to win over 100 games, Toronto is going to win the AL wild card and San Francisco will make a run in the playoffs.

	Keep dreaming…

I will bet you 30 bucks this wont happen. i’ll contact you again at the end of the season

Your AL East “predictions” aren’t exactly predictions — more like wishful thinking.

	Really?

The Dodgers winning 88 games? Sure

The Blue Jays winning the AL East? Yeah right

It seems you can’t even do basic math. Half of your predictions are 164 games. Pretty sure they play 162

i think youre overestimating the angels

my money is on rays next year for al east theyre much more promising than jays
(unless they get fielder)

Good predictions, lol, i wonder how long it took, but idk about having the jays coming in first in the east….. mayb the wild card if even, no the jays arent going to make it to the playoffs- but they will start off well then die out. Also, the orioles will be better than you ahve, same with the red sox… are you kidding- red sox are going to be wild card

Division leaders:
Yankees
Angels
Tigers
Phillies
Cardinals
D-backs

Wild card
Red Sox
Marlins

World Series game:
Yankees- Marlins

YANKEES GNA BEAT THE RED SOX IN ALCS AGAIN AND THEY WILL WIN THE SERIES LETS GOOO

WTF ARE U HIGH? WHITE SOX WILL BEAT 2ND IN THE DIVISION AT LEAST

A’s will do better then the mariners

Blue jays are gonna be in 4th ..Yankees and sox will compete for the top along with rays being in there

dodgers 88 games? wow good luck with that

the only thing u predicted right was the NL central

Why can’t the Dodgers win 88 games they won 82 in 2011 it’s not a big difference.

	Your W/L don’t add up to 162 games…

hopefully cubs dont go like that blue jays wont win that many sorry there not better than the yankees redsox or rays

Basically, I’ve never had any favorites. I’ve never had a favorite color, singer, food, sport, movie, book, band.. etc
Now, of course I have preferences; for example, I love some things but hate others. Yet, when having to pick only one thing I like most, I can’t. I just love variety. If i had to pick one thing I like most, I can usually narrow it down to some choices but never to one. Usually, what I like most is usually dictated by what mood I’m in.

Actually, there is only one favorite I have that comes to mind but I don’t really think it counts because its based on my surroundings. My favorite sports teams are the Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins, Miami Marlins, Miami Hurricanes, and the Florida Panthers. However, this is due to the fact that I was born and raised in Miami. If I moved around as a child, I doubt I would even have favorite sports teams.

So, what does not having any favorites say about me?
Is this fairly common?
Is it weird?
-To the people who say that it means I’m boring
I actually have lots of friends and I’m usually the life of the party, lol. I’m very outgoing, love dancing, playing sports…etc… I consider myself fairly entertaining.

It says your boring, and may need to look deeper and stop being scared, your on the surface and you don’t care about anything deeper.

	You are a cynical asshole

Wow! Was just having this conversation with my best friend about people like you the other day and my take is that they don’t restrict focus into just any one thing. It takes more to move and impress these people so their interest is usually general. They’re usually not recreational minded people. That means their mind isn’t occupied or driven by the little things that keeps the average mind excited.

It doesn’t mean you’re weird, it just means you embrace and enjoy a lot of things! People like you are great because you don’t narrow your options down! You’ve got what I call “P-zazz!” — that’s a good thing by the way! ^^

That you are a boring person and will never find love

Online betting players have been treated to a thrilling World Series so far, complete with pitching duels, historic offensive performances and sloppy bullpen work. Its going to come down to a seventh game, so MLB wagering fans should strap in for an exciting week of baseball as the season comes to a close in St. Louis with a Cardinals victory.

Game 5 – Monday, October 24th, 8:05 PM ET The Ballpark, Arlington, TX

Chris Carpenter (3-0, 3.52) didnt have his best stuff in Game 1s 3-2 win at home, but he managed to get by, giving up a pair of runs on five hits over six innings of work. C.J. Wilson (0-3, 7.17) had trouble with his command, walking six and striking out four, but he only allowed three runs on four hits. Its been an inconsistent postseason for the 30-year-old Wilson, and this is his first appearance at home since Game 1 of the ALCS against Detroit. You have to remember that this is only his second year as a starter and Wilson threw 223.1 innings in the regular season, along with 21.1 innings in the postseason, so fatigue is definitely a factor.

Carpenter is built for this and even when he doesnt have his best stuff, he does enough to keep the Cardinals in the game, and even though he has a 6.99 ERA in five starts at the Ballpark, he has a 2-2 record. You also should count on the St. Louis bats to wake up after a disappointing 4-0 loss in Game 4, and as a +113 MLB betting underdog on Monday night, they would be a smart bet.

Betting Edge: St. Louis Cardinals

Game 6 – Wednesday, October 26th, 8:05 PM ET Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO

Colby Lewis (1-1, 2.95) should be familiar with going out on the road as all three of his starts in the playoffs have been away from home, and he pitched 6.2 solid innings in Game 2s 2-1 win for the Rangers, allowing a run on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Jaime Garcia (0-2, 3.97) was on the other side, tossing a three-hitter over seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and a walk, but he was let down by Jason Motte, who blew the save in the 9th inning. That was his second straight no-decision, even though he has settled down since getting off to a rough start in the postseason.

Strangely, something similar will happen in this game as well as the Rangers try to stave off elimination with a big performance. Look for the Texas bats to come alive late in the game and in particular, one of their big bats, like Nelson Cruz or Josh Hamilton, who is battling what he thinks is a sports hernia. The Cardinals will probably be favored, but Texas is the MLB betting play on Wednesday night.

Betting Edge: Texas Rangers

Game 7 – Thursday, October 27th, 8:05 PM ET Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO (If necessary)

The Rangers Matt Harrison (1-1, 502) and the Cardinals Kyle Lohse (0-2, 7.82) have been penciled in as the starters for Game 7, and neither pitcher made it out of the fourth inning in a 16-7 win for St. Louis in Game 3, which was highlighted by Albert Pujols three-homer performance. Harrison gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits over 3.2 innings, while Lohse gave up three runs on five hits over three innings of work in a game for the offensive fans. Its doubtful that the two will have that type of game again in Game 7, especially in St. Louis where the games have been relatively low-scoring due to a few factors, but most likely the weather. It has been cold and damp in St. Louis, which makes the ball heavier. In Texas, the ball is much easier to hit and the Ballpark has always been known as a hitters park.

This is going to be up in the air and again, the bullpens will probably come into play as Harrison doesnt have much postseason experience and the Rangers are asking him to pitch a Game 7 in the World Series. Lohse, well, he isnt a very good pitcher and definitely pitched above his weight during the regular season. But at home, in a Game 7 setting and a managerial edge with St. Louis Tony LaRussa, St. Louis is the sports betting pick to make here.

Betting Edge: St. Louis Cardinals
